Job description
The Australian Council of Trade Unions is seeking a highly skilled and dynamic media and social marketing professional to join our communications team.
The person we are looking for will perform a major role in the production and distribution of high quality information materials and support the PR and campaign activities of the ACTU.
This is a two year project to implement the ‘Working for a Better Life’ communications platform that offers an excellent opportunity for the right person.
The successful candidate will work closely with the President, Secretary and other senior union officials.
He or she must have highly developed verbal and written skills and campaign or project management experience or union experience.
We are looking for someone with a tertiary qualification and several years experience in journalism, media relations or other relevant field.
Publishing, research, and/or policy experience and a commitment to the union movement are highly desirable.
The position is based in Melbourne and requires out of hours work and some travel.

2. RESEARCH OFFICER - Economic / Social Research

Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the peak body of the Australian union movement for a suitably qualified and experienced person to take on a role in our dynamic team of economic research staff. Responsibilities include:
- Advice on economic and social policy to the ACTU Officers and affiliated unions
- Research on a broad range of social and economic issues
- As part of the economic research team prepare significant cases before Fair Work Australia, including minimum wages adjustments and test cases
- Submissions to governments, research papers, preparation of speeches and other publications
Experience & qualifications
The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to the labour movement, with relevant experience and qualifications in economics and social policy desirable.
Key Criteria includes:
- Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues
- Knowledge of state and federal legislation (eg economic matters, social security, and labour market)
- Knowledge of economic and labour market concepts
- Excellent written communication skills
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Ability to plan and prioritise work
Salary
A competitive remuneration package will be provided (depending on experience and skills). This role is Melbourne CBD-based and will require some interstate travel.

3. CAMPAIGN COORDINATORS (5 Positions)

Job Description
Do you want to build on the work started with the Your Rights at Work campaign in the last federal election? We need talented and enthusiastic campaign coordinators to undertake the key work of continuing to build our campaigning capacity.
In this role, you will use your demonstrated union, political or community campaigning experience to take a major role in working with Trades and Labour Councils and affiliates in engaging union members and the wider community. These positions will be for up to 12 months, commencing in late January 2010.
Positions available in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane (one in each), and will work out of the ACTU and/or the Trades and Labour Councils. Some intra- and interstate travel required.
The Campaign Coordinators are to:
- Liaise closely with Trades and Labour Councils (TLCs), local ACTU Organising Centre personnel and affiliates regarding the ACTU’s campaign strategies
- Develop plans with TLCs, ACTU Organising Centre personnel and affiliates to ensure coordination of campaign activities
- Research and identify campaigning issues, focus and resources
- Develop plans with affiliates to engage with members
- Plan and coordinate campaign events with TLCs, ACTU Organising Centre personnel and affiliates
- Develop kits and materials to assist TLCs and affiliates
- Maintain campaign databases and websites
- Provide assistance to TLCs with state campaigns and local priorities
Key selection Criteria
- Demonstrated experience in union, political or community campaigning roles
- Strong skills in strategic campaigning with a focus on campaigning aimed at building capacity and activity on the ground
- Good knowledge of campaigning strategies and emerging campaigning tools
- Good familiarity with multimedia approaches to campaigning
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to develop strong relationships with key stakeholders
- Excellent initiative and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to the principles of trade unionism
